Hello! I'm Zona Sofono from South Africa. I enjoy meeting people from different cultures, exploring new places, and discovering cosy cafés around Budapest. In my free time, I love reading, writing, taking walks along the Danube, and spending quality time with friends. I'm also passionate about helping others, which is why I enjoy volunteering, mentoring, and supporting fellow international students. Living abroad has taught me to appreciate new experiences while staying connected to my South African roots.

 

What stood out to me most was ELTE's diverse international community and welcoming environment. From my first interactions with staff and students, I felt that the university genuinely values students from different backgrounds. I was also impressed by ELTE's academic reputation, research opportunities, and the support available to help international students adjust to life in Hungary.

Studying at ELTE offers much more than earning a degree. The university provides quality education while encouraging critical thinking, collaboration, and personal growth. Being surrounded by students and academics from around the world creates an inspiring learning environment, and Budapest itself offers countless cultural, social, and professional opportunities that enrich the overall student experience.

Like many international students, adapting to a new academic system while settling into a different country was initially challenging. As a PhD student, balancing coursework, research, teaching responsibilities, leadership roles, and personal life has also required careful planning and discipline. Research can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when managing long-term projects and deadlines.

I learned to stay organised by planning my time carefully and breaking larger tasks into smaller, achievable goals. I wasn't afraid to ask for guidance from my supervisors, lecturers, and fellow students whenever I needed support. Building friendships, becoming involved in student communities, and maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal life also helped me stay motivated and resilient.

My degree is helping me develop not only as a researcher but also as a critical thinker, problem solver, and communicator. The knowledge and skills I'm gaining will allow me to contribute meaningfully to research, education, and organisational development while creating opportunities to collaborate internationally and make a positive impact in my field.

Be open to new experiences and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Get involved in student activities, explore Budapest, and connect with people from different cultures;  you'll learn just as much outside the classroom as you do inside it. If you ever need help, ask for it. ELTE has many supportive staff members, student organisations, and fellow students who are willing to assist. Most importantly, enjoy the journey because studying abroad is an experience that will shape you in ways you never imagined.
