LMS transition for students
Canvas? Moodle!

LMS transition for students

Over the past 10 years, ELTE has used two LMSs (learning management systems)—Canvas and Moodle—and our instructors have been able to decide, whether a course should have a course platform in one of these systems and, if so, in which one. If a course has an online platform available in an LMS, it typically contains the course materials, assignments, quizzes, and other learning activities.

Starting in December 2025, in accordance with a decision by the University Leadership, the gradual standardization of learning management systems began, as of February 2027, Moodle will be ELTE’s official LMS

On this page, you will find all the most important information for students regarding the transition in one place.

What will change – where can I find my courses?

From September 2026

Starting in the fall semester of the 2026/2027 academic year, instructors at the ÁJK, BDPK, BTK, GTK, and TTK will only be able to launch their courses on Moodle; this means that the platforms currently in use forthe semester (if the course lecturer has requested one) will be accessible via Moodle. Previous Canvas courses will remain accessible during the transition period (scheduled to last until the summer of 2027), meaning you will still have access to the materials there for the next two semesters—however, since this system is being phased out, we recommend that you save any content that is important to you in time.

From February 2027

The full transition for BGGYK, IK, PPK, TÁTK, and TÓK will take place during the spring semester of the 2026/2027 academic year. In the fall semester of 2026, you may still encounter Canvas courses at thesefaculties; it is up to individual instructors to decide which platform they wish to use for their courses.

If you are unsure which system to use to find a specific course, check the course information provided by your professor.

What will happen to my previous Canvas courses?

Canvas will remain available during the transition period, so you will still be able to access your previous Canvas courses; the University will provide advance notice of the date it will be shut down.

I can’t find my courses. What should I do?

If you can't find the online platform for the course you registered for in Neptun, there are a few things you should check.

1. Is there an online course platform for the course?

Whether a course has a platform in the LMS is decided by the lecturer. It is a good idea to check Neptun for this information (Course --> Details --> Other Information --> Supplementary e-learning System) and to read the lecturer’s course description.

2. Are you looking for the course in the correct LMS?

During the transition period, as described above, courses in certain departments may be available on either the Moodle or Canvas platform; it is up to the instructor to decide which platform to use. (You can alsocheck this in Neptun as described in section 1.)

3. Has the course been published by the lecturer?

A course you have enrolled in Neptun may not appear immediately in the LMS; it may become available later.

4. When did you enroll inthe course in Neptun?

Due to the data transfer between Neptun and the LMS, it may take some time for the course to appear; changes made in Neptun are typically synchronized with the LMS platforms the following day.

5. A megfelelő helyen keresi? Are you looking for the course in the correct place?

The learning platform is available at https://moodle.elte.hu after logging in with your Neptun ID. Once you’ve logged in, you’ll find your courses under the “My Courses” menu item. If you don’t see your course in the list at first, try the following:

  • From the drop-down menu at the far left of the top bar, select “All (except hidden ones),” and all your courses will become visible.

  • At the bottom of the page, on the left side, click the drop-down menu next to “Show” to choose whether to display 12, 24, or all your courses on a single page.

  • If the “All” option is not selected in the previous section, you can scroll on the right side at the bottom of the page if you have more courses than can be displayed on that page based on the current settings.
