The project Making Mobility the NORM – or shorter, NORM will engage in ambitious research to map the existing mobility structures across European higher education institutions.

The vision of a European Education Area is that of an inclusive space where spending time abroad to study and learn is the norm. After all, mobile students come back with new skills and competences, become more tolerant and better aware of common values, develop an entrepreneurial mindset and increase their employability prospects. However, data shows that less than 20% of all higher education graduates in Europe have had a study or training experience abroad. What does it take to make student mobility the norm? To answer this question, the NORM project will engage in ambitious research to map the existing mobility structures across European higher education institutions (HEIs) and identify the main bottlenecks and barriers to student mobility. 

Based on this research, the project will produce a European Curricula Design Guide and prototype an IT solution that helps students and HEIs share their course catalogues and easily find equivalences between them, ultimately strengthening the reliability of learning agreements and facilitating the recognition of credits after mobility. As a further step towards action, the seven universities in the consortium will commit to five-year plans to redesign their institutional strategies to formally embed student mobility in their curricula and make it the norm for their students.
