Student Card
WHAT IS THE STUDENT CARD?
The student card (diákigazolvány) is a document which certifies that you are a student of ELTE and that you are eligible for student discounts. You can obtain student discounts with you student card in several places, such as public transportation, museums, libraries or cinemas. You should always read each place’s own regulation regarding the student discounts as some places may not accept all types of student card. For example, you can find the conditions for the monthly Budapest student pass on the website of the Centre for Budapest Transport (BKK).
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR A STUDENT CARD AT ELTE?
You can have a student card if
- you have a legal student status at ELTE
- and you have an Education ID registered in Neptun
- and your current semester is active.
Please keep in mind that student cards and temporary student certificates can only be requested from the beginning of your first active semester’s academic/study period!
I AM GOING TO STAY FOR SHORTER THAN 12 MONTHS AT ELTE. CAN I GET A STUDENT CARD?
If you are a student staying at ELTE shorter than 12 months (e.g. Erasmus students), you can receive a temporary student certificate without having to apply for a plastic student card.
The temporary student certificate is an A4-sized paper containing a QR-code and your data (name, place and date of birth, address, type of student status) which can be used for student discounts. This certificate is valid for 60 days, thus, you need to renew it after 60 days. Please always check the expiry date in the top right corner of the certificate (“Érvényességi ideje”).
To receive a temporary student certificate (and to renew it), you need to visit Quaestura Office and make your request there. When you go to Quaestura, please take your ID (EU members) or passport (outside EU) with you.
I AM GOING TO STAY FOR LONGER THAN 12 MONTHS AT ELTE. CAN I GET A STUDENT CARD?
If you are a student staying at ELTE longer than 12 months (e.g. full-time students), you cannot have a temporary student certificate without applying for a (plastic) permanent student card first.
To receive a permanent student card, you need to visit one of the office of the Hungarian Integrated Customer Service (Kormányablak) and ask for a so-called NEK-document. You, then, have to create a request in Neptun with the NEK-document. Please read through the detailed step-by-step guide on the website of Quaestura Office carefully before doing anything regarding the application (click here).
It takes a few months until your permanent student card is manufactured, therefore, we strongly recommend you to request also a temporary student certificate (see the previous question). The student card will be posted to Quaestura Office who will notify you in a Neptun message as soon as your student card arrives and can be obtained.
