To do's right after you arrive at ELTE

To-do’s right after you arrive at ELTE

Here is a list of the most important things to do after arrival

It is very important that you always read the emails carefully you receive from your Faculty because these emails contain the most important dates for all administration you need to do at the Faculty, such as enrolment, registration, faculty orientation events, etc.

Besides the necessary to-do's listed below, you can read more on further practical matters and university life on the website.

Meet your mentor

When you arrive at the airport or your accommodation, contact your local student mentor who can show you around the campus and the city.

If you do not have a mentor yet, you can still ask for a mentor after arrival.

Get your Neptun ID and password

Most new incoming international students receive their Neptun ID (also called "Neptun code") via email from their International Faculty Coordinators already before arrival. After you have the Neptun ID, you need to create a password electronically here before arrival.

If you have no Neptun ID or Neptun password yet upon arrival, you need to arrange it as soon as you can after arrival.

Check in at your Faculty Coordinator: Registration and Enrolment (enrolment only for degree-seeking students)

For non-degree seeking, exchange students: Registration at ELTE

Your Faculty Coordinator will:

  • help you register at ELTE and for the semester as well;
  • set your status as “active” in the Neptun electronic registry system;
  • give you your Neptun code;
  • give you a certificate to prove that you have student status at ELTE.

For degree-seeking students: Enrolment at ELTE

If you are a degree-seeking student, check the enrolment information of the FACULTY Enrolment: the procedure is compulsory and consists of two parts, an electronic and a personal administration section. With your Neptun ID and password, you can arrange the electronic part already before you arrive at ELTE.

It is important that you check the emails you receive from your Faculty Coordinator, as the organization and scheduling of the in-person enrolment and registration might be organized differently at different faculties.

In general: Log into Neptun to register for the next semester and print the “enrolment package” (consisting of different forms and declarations). If you have any problems with this, please contact your Faculty Coordinator. The personal part can only take place after the electronic part, as the documents produced during the electronic part have to be signed and handed in. Do not forget to bring the necessary documents with you for the personal part. If you have a scholarship, as part of the enrolment you also have to sign the scholarship agreement; if you are a self-financed student, you have to sign an educational agreement.

Register for the courses

Log into Neptun with your Neptun code and password and you can sign up for the courses of the upcoming semester. Check the deadlines for Neptun administrative procedures, including course registration here.

ELTE offers Hungarian language courses for international students during the semester. When you sign up for your mandatory courses, you can also sign up for these as optional ones.

Request a residence permit (for non-EEA citizens)

Read details about the visa / residence permit here.

If you traveled to Hungary visa-free, you need to apply for a residence permit for the purpose of study: online on the Enter Hungary website.

If you have traveled to Hungary with a D-visa and have already applied for the residence permit at the Hungarian Embassy/Consulate in your home country, you only need to receive your residence permit.

All residence permits for the purpose of study are sent to ELTE by post. You can receive your residence permit at ELTE Quaestura Office, shortly after it arrives. Please wait for a notification from the Quaestura Office with the time and place to receive your card.

Citizens of the states of the European Economic Area (EEA) are entitled to enter the territory of the Hungarian Republic in possession of a valid identity card or passport and may stay, for up to 90 days, without any special authorisation. If your stay is going to exceed 90 days, you have to apply for a Registration Certificate during the first 90 days on the Enter Hungary website of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing.

Request a Student ID Card

After your arrival and enrolment, you can obtain a Student Identity Card or a Temporary Student Certificate depending on the length of your studies at ELTE at Quaestura Office.

Attend the Orientation Week

There is an Orientation Week organised for all newly arriving international students at the beginning of each semester. We strongly advise you to attend the events, where you can meet fellow international students and hear about the university and practical matters.

Arrange health insurance for your stay in Hungary

Make sure that you have a health insurance that you can use for health care services during your stay in Hungary.

Students holding a Hungarian governmental scholarship are entitled to receive a social security card, called a “TAJ” card. Please follow the instructions on how to request a TAJ card.

Open a Hungarian bank account (mandatory for students with a scholarship funded by the Hungarian Government)

In order to receive the scholarship, you need to open a Hungarian bank account and register it in the Neptun system. If you do not register your Hungarian bank account number in the Neptun system, your scholarship cannot be transferred to you.

Request a Tax Identification Number and Card (mandatory for students with a scholarship funded by the Hungarian Government)

The National Tax and Customs Administration of Hungary issues the Tax Identification Number and Card. Please contact any of their offices. If you do not register your Tax ID number in the Neptun system (ask the Quaestura Office for help in registering), your scholarship cannot be transferred to you.
