Green travel support
Green travel support
A) Conditions for green travel support
Students of ELTE participating in Erasmus+ long-term (studies, traineeship, traineeship after graduation) or short-term mobility, who opt for green travel between the sending and host countries, may receive additional support.
Green travel (confirmed sustainable means of transport) is defined as the travel that uses low-emissions means of transport for at least 50% of the total return journey (i.e. at least in one direction) between the sending and host or its neighbouring countries, such as bus, train, car-pooling or bike. Flights and boat trips are not considered green. Travelling by car is only eligible for additional support in the case of car-sharing (e.g. car-sharing service or at least two Erasmus+ scholarship holders travel in one car together, etc.). If the scholarship holder is accompanied by a relative or friend only, it does not qualify as green travel!
When the receiving country is Malta, and the student travels to Southern Italy by train, continuing their journey by boat from there, and they travel home the same way, it is considered green travel. However,
- if the receiving country is France, and the student travels to Paris by plane, continuing their journey in a green travel form (e.g. train, bus) to the host city, or
- if the receiving country is Malta, and the student travels to Southern Italy by train, continuing their journey by boat from there, but returns home by plane (i.e. less than 50% of the total return journey is sustainable),
they are not eligible for additional support.
B) How to request green travel support
Students requesting the additional support must declare the form of their travel when preparing their before the mobility documentation (long-term mobility within Europe, short-term mobility within Europe, Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility).
C) Amount and settlement of the additional support
1. The amount of additional support:
1.1 Green basic support
Green basic support is available to students who
- participate in a long-term traineeship mobility within Europe, or
- participate in a long-term studies mobility within Europe (up to and including autumn 2024 departures), or
- participate in a short-term mobility within Europe and do not receive additional financial support for students with fewer opportunities, or
- participate in a mobility outside Europe in a close partner country (UK, Switzerland).
In their case, the additional support is as follows:
- Students are eligible for a single contribution of €50, only if at least 50% of the total return journey (i.e. at least in one direction) is sustainable (see section III./A).
- In addition they may receive additional individual grant for travel days based on the distance between the sending and the host institution as follows:
- Under 1000 km Awarded students may receive 1-1 additional travel days* before and after the mobility, if they opt for green travel at the beginning as well as the end of their mobility. If they opt for an only one-way green travel, either on their way to start their mobility or coming back to Hungary at the end of their mobility, students may receive 1 additional travel day.
- 1000 km and above: Awarded students may receive 2-2 additional travel days* before and after the mobility, if they opt for green travel at the beginning as well as the end of their mobility. If they opt for an only one-way green travel, either on their way to start their mobility or coming back to Hungary at the end of their mobility, students may receive 2 additional travel days.
*In the case of long-term mobility, the grant per travel day equals to 1/30 of the monthly Erasmus+ individual grant.
1.2 Green basic grant supplemented by travel support
Travel support is available to students who
- participate in a long-term studies mobility within Europe (starting with students traveling abroad in the spring semester of 2025), or
- participate in a short-term mobility within Europe and receive additional financial support for students with fewer opportunities (see point I.), or
- participate in a mobility outside Europe in a remote partner country (partner countries except UK and Switzerland).
In their case, the additional support is as follows:
- If the distance between the sending and the receiving institution is
- under 1000 km, awarded students may receive 1-1 additional travel days* before and after the mobility, if they opt for green travel at the beginning as well as the end of their mobility. If they opt for an only one-way green travel, either on their way to start their mobility or coming back to Hungary at the end of their mobility, students may receive 1 additional travel day.
- 1000 km or above, awarded students may receive 2-2 additional travel days* before and after the mobility, if they opt for green travel at the beginning as well as the end of their mobility. If they opt for an only one-way green travel, either on their way to start their mobility or coming back to Hungary at the end of their mobility, students may receive 2 additional travel days.
- In addition, the amount of travel support for confirmed green travel is higher for distances between 100-3999 km (see table below), if at least 50% of the total return journey (i.e. at least in one direction) is sustainable (see section III./A). The travel support is a one-time support, calculated on the basis of the air distance between the headquarters of the sending and the host institutions (city) by using the distance calculator supported by the European Commission.

Accordingly, please take special care to keep the tickets used during the trip!
Accepted certificates:
- travel documents (travel tickets - e.g. bus ticket, train ticket), which contain the name of the student, the travel dates and the location of departure and arrival, or
- without them (e.g. carsharing, car-pooling, train ticket without a name) a legal liability form (through a customer gateway with AVDH authentication, or signed and scanned with a pen).

Green travel (confirmed sustainable means of transport) is defined as the travel that uses low-emissions means of transport for the main part of the travel (between the sending and host or its neighbouring countries), such as bus, train, car-pooling or bike. Flights and boat trips are not considered green. Travelling by car is only eligible for additional support, if at least two Erasmus+ scholarship holders team up and make a conscious choice to car-share in order to travel more sustainably.
