To-do’s before you arrive at ELTE
Here is a list of the most important things to do before arrival
It is very important that you always read the emails carefully you receive from your Faculty because these emails contain the most important dates for all administration you need to do at the Faculty, such as enrolment, registration, faculty orientation events, etc.
Besides the necessary to-do's listed below, you can read more on further practical matters and university life on the website.
Check the academic calendar
Check the academic calendar to see the semesters, breaks and examination period.
For administrative deadlines, please visit the Neptun system.
For faculty-specific information, please also check all emails you receive from your Faculty International Coordinator who sends you the schedule about the orientation events and administrative to-do's before and after your arrival.
Contact your faculty’s international office (in case of any questions)
While you are here at ELTE and before you arrive to Hungary, you can turn with your questions and issues to the international office of your faculty. At every faculty you can also find a Stipendium Hungaricum Coordinator who will help you during your time at our university.
Before you arrive, your Faculty International Coordinator sends you all information you need about the enrolment or registration as well as orientation events at the faculty (with links, schedule, date, etc.)
Ask for a mentor
An English-speaking local student mentor (a member of the student organisations ESN ELTE or Stipendium Hungaricum Mentor Network (SHMN) will help you find your way at ELTE and in Budapest. Your local student mentor is available for you throughout the whole period of your stay at ELTE and also prior to your arrival. Contact ESN ELTE or SHMN and ask for a mentor before your arrival.
Arrange the visa application (only for students from non-EEA states with a visa requirement)
Read details about the visa / residence permit here.
Citizens of the states of the European Economic Area (EEA) are entitled to enter the territory of the Hungarian Republic in possession of a valid identity card or passport and may stay, for up to 90 days, without any special authorisation.
If your stay is going to exceed 90 days, you have to apply for a Registration Certificate during the first 90 days on the Enter Hungary website of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing.
If you are a student from a non-EEA country, you need to obtain a residence permit for the purpose of study. First you need to check if you need a visa to enter Hungary or you are coming from a visa-waiver country.
If you need a visa to enter Hungary, you have to submit the residence permit application form at the Hungarian Consulate or at other locations authorised to issue residence or nationality permits. You are strongly advised to apply for the residence permit for the purpose of study in your home country as soon as you receive the Letter of Acceptance, but at least one month before arriving in Hungary. With this procedure, you are also applying for the residence permit visa (D-visa) which allows you to enter Hungary only once and stay for 30 days before receiving your residence permit.
If you come from a visa-waiver country, you may arrive in Hungary and stay here legally for 90 days. After your arrival, you have to apply online for a residence permit for the purpose of study on the Enter Hungary website of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing.
Get your Neptun ID and password
Neptun is the electronic registry system at ELTE where you can register for your lectures and exams, follow the results of your courses and financial matters, and communicate with your fellows and professors via Neptun.
Most new incoming international students receive their Neptun ID (also called "Neptun code") via email from their International Faculty Coordinators already before arrival. After you have the Neptun ID, you can create a password electronically here.
Please check the "Help" menu and get familiar with Neptun system.
Neptun system: Enrolment (for degree-seeking students) / Registration (for non-degree seeking exchange students)
Enrol if you come to study on a degree programme with the intent to earn a degree from ELTE.
Register if you come to study at ELTE as a non-degree-seeking, exchange student.
Enrolment: If you are a new degree-seeking student, your student status will be established by enrolment, which is therefore a compulsory procedure consisting of two parts: an electronic and a personal administration section. If the personal data given during the enrolment procedure are correct and you have received your Neptun ID (also called "Neptun code”) in advance, you can start the electronic part before leaving your home country. Check the list of documents you have to bring with you for the procedure (originals are needed!). If you have any questions, please contact your Faculty Coordinator.
Registration: If you are an exchange student (e.g., Erasmus student, CEEPUS student) at ELTE, please ask your Faculty International Coordinator to help you with the registration process. It is important that you register so that your Faculty Coordinator can arrange your official student status in the “Neptun” online registry system at ELTE before your arrival.
Arrange travel and health insurance for the period until you enrol at ELTE
Arrange travel and health insurance for yourself for your travel and for the period until you can arrange and receive your insurance at ELTE in September.
If you are an EEA student, it is advisable to also apply for a European Health Insurance Card from your health insurance institution in your homeland before you leave from home.
If you are a non-EEA student (coming from outside of the European Economic Area), you should consider which option suits you and your circumstances best and what you are entitled to have. After your enrolment, you can choose to purchase a fee-for-service health insurance at the Quaestura Office of Student Services.
Read details about health insurance available during your studies here.
Note that Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) students and Scholarship Programme for Christian Young People (SCYP) students will be eligible for private and state-funded health insurance after they are enrolled and have all the necessary documents.
