Ten universities from Hungary have been included in the list of the world's top 1,500 institutions, with ELTE ranking second among Hungarian universities this year, placing 584th overall.
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) published its 2026 World University Rankings on June 19, featuring 1,500 institutions from more than a hundred countries worldwide. The list was compiled using ten weighted indicators (academic reputation, citations, employer satisfaction, graduates' employment outcomes, faculty-to-student ratio, sustainability, as well as international education, research collaborations, and student ratios) to evaluate the universities. You can read more about the methodology on this page in English.
Ten institutions from Hungary made it into the rankings, with the University of Debrecen currently leading at 563rd place globally. Eötvös Loránd University is ranked 584th in the world and second nationally. Other Hungarian universities among the top thousand include the University of Szeged (597th), Budapest University of Technology and Economics (711-720), and the University of Pécs (741-750). In the 1001-1200 bracket are the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE), Széchenyi István University in Győr, and Óbuda University, while the University of Miskolc and University of Pannonia are in the 1201-1400 range.
Eötvös Loránd University improved its score in indicators measuring internationalization (research collaborations and proportion of international students) compared to last year. Based on the overall results, ELTE outperformed, for example, the University of Siena, the University of Zaragoza, and the University of Zagreb in Europe. Among European institutions, the Sorbonne is 72nd, Heidelberg is 80th, Charles University in Prague holds the 265th position, and the University of Warsaw is 271st. Among ELTE’s CHARM-EU partner universities, Trinity College Dublin ranked 75th, Utrecht University 103rd, and the University of Barcelona 160th globally.
There are no new entrants to the top 10 this year; four American, four British, one Swiss, and one Singaporean university continue to share the highest spots, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Imperial College London, and Stanford taking the podium in that order. Among Chinese institutions, Tsinghua University reached 17th, and Fudan University 30th. The largest improvement on the list was achieved by Malaysia's Sunway University, which climbed 120 places compared to last year’s results.
