The Faculty of Education and Psychology at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE PPK) and UNICEF Hungary have signed a cooperation agreement to support the mental health of children and young people. The aim of this collaboration is to ensure that university research, professional expertise and the practical experience of the children’s rights organisation bring about real, positive changes in the lives of young people.
According to UNICEF figures, more than one in seven young people aged between 10 and 19 worldwide live with a diagnosable mental health condition, whilst in Europe around 16% of this age group are affected. Depression, anxiety and behavioural disorders are among the most significant health problems affecting adolescents.
The partnership agreement that has just been signed is a response to this situation, focusing on supporting children’s wellbeing, mental health, social participation and awareness of sustainability. The agreement was signed on 16 September by Andrea Dúll, Dean of ELTE PPK, and Antónia Mészáros, Executive Director of UNICEF Hungary.
As part of the partnership, the two organisations will collaborate on joint research projects to support policy decisions and practical interventions with up-to-date data. In addition, they will develop professional and methodological resources for parents, teachers and professionals; organise joint conferences, workshops and professional programmes; and seek out domestic and international funding opportunities. Students at ELTE PPK can also get involved in UNICEF Hungary’s volunteer programmes.
On the occasion of the signing, Antónia Mészáros emphasised that
lasting change in the field of mental health can only be achieved when professional expertise, public awareness, the experience of civil society and government accountability come together.
“As a children’s rights organisation, it is our important task to bring these areas and stakeholders together. This collaborative work is now being strengthened by our strategic partnership with ELTE PPK.”
Andrea Dúll pointed out that the agreement just signed takes a professional relationship that has been developing for several years to a new level. Staff from ELTE PPK are taking part in UNICEF Hungary’s "Your Future Is in Your Hands!" programme, contributed to the professional work of the University Climate Protection Roadshow, and, through the ELTE PPK School Psychology Methodology Centre, collaborated on a national research project exploring the situation of nursery and school psychologists. “The academic and methodological expertise accumulated at the Faculty of Education and Psychology will henceforth serve even more directly to improve the quality of life of children and young people,” said the dean.
As part of this collaboration, experts from the university will also be taking part as speakers at UNICEF Hungary’s event on 18 November, titled "Mental Health Conference for Children".
