Eötvös Loránd University achieved absolute first place in psychology, humanities, life sciences, and physical sciences, and shared first place in law in the THE 2026 subject rankings among Hungarian higher education institutions.
Times Higher Education published its 2026 subject rankings on January 21, which evaluate the world’s higher education institutions in 11 academic fields. The top list is compiled based on 18 indicators, using the methodology applied in the THE World University Rankings, but with the added distinction that the unique characteristics of each field are also taken into account.
Eötvös Loránd University ranked among the world’s best in 9 out of 11 fields this year. Our university achieved absolute first place in the domestic field rankings for humanities, life sciences, physical sciences, and psychology, and shares first place in law with the University of Szeged. This year, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) again performed the best internationally, maintaining first place in humanities, economics, and social sciences. The world rankings for law and education are led by Stanford, with Harvard topping the charts in engineering and life sciences, while in physical sciences the California Institute of Technology holds first place.
In informatics and medicine/health-related fields, Oxford took the top spot this year, while in psychology, Cambridge stood on the highest step of the podium. THE’s analysis notes that Asian higher education institutions are increasingly achieving strong results not only in STEM fields, which have traditionally been their strength, but also in the humanities.
