In the Times Higher Education ranking, which includes more than 1,500 universities, Eötvös Loránd University again finished in the 801-1000 category this year, thereby earning the bronze among Hungarian higher education institutions.

Times Higher Education has published its 2026 World University Rankings, which were compiled based on an examination of more than 2,100 higher education institutions in 115 countries, of which just over 1,500 made it onto the list of the world’s best universities.

The ranking is prepared based on a total of 18 indicators, which measure universities’ performance in four main categories: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. You can read more about the ranking methodology here in English.

The new ranking includes one more Hungarian institution than last year, with 12 now featured. Like last year, Eötvös Loránd University is in the 801-1000 category, again sharing the national bronze with the University of Debrecen (801-1000), behind Semmelweis University (251-300) and Óbuda University (601-800).

The other Hungarian institutions in the ranking are: in the 1001-1200 category the University of Pécs and the University of Szeged; in the 1201-1500 group Budapest University of Technology and Economics and MATE; and in the 1501+ category Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Széchenyi István University, University of Miskolc, University of Pannonia, Budapest Business School, Budapest Metropolitan University, Eszterházy Károly Catholic University, Neumann János University, and University of Sopron.

At the top of the international ranking, Oxford has held first place for ten years in a row; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) remains second, while this year Princeton University took the third spot instead of Harvard. As expected, seven American and three British universities are in the top ten. Among traditionally strong performers, ETH Zurich is in 11th place, and Tsinghua University in Beijing is 12th.

The results of THE’s 2026 World University Rankings can be browsed by geographical region on the organization’s website, and ELTE’s domestic and international ranking results are summarized in this article.
