Hello! I’m Raudha, and I am currently pursuing my PhD in Sociology here at ELTE. Coming from the Maldives, moving to Budapest was a big leap, but I have officially found my footing. After completing my Master’s in Psychology at ELTE on the stipendium hungaricum scholarship, I decided to continue my educational journey here.

Budapest has truly become a second home. Whether it’s finding my favourite corners in the city parks, keeping up with my gym routine, or enjoying coffee with the friends who have become my local family, I’ve found a beautiful balance here.

While I cherish my trips back to the Maldives and visit friends living abroad during my holidays, I’ve built a strong circle of friends and support systems right here in Budapest. I’m now fully immersed in my doctoral journey and would love to help you navigate your own transition into life at ELTE. Write to me, I reply to my emails really fast.

"My journey is more than just a degree. It’s an experience that is helping me find my own voice and sharpen my perspective."

WHAT STOOD OUT TO YOU ABOUT ELTE?

Having completed my Master's at ELTE, I already knew firsthand that this is a place where academic rigour meets a genuinely supportive international environment. When deciding where to pursue my doctoral studies, I didn't have to look far. The Sociology department here offers the perfect blend of critical research opportunities and a vibrant, diverse community that pushes me to think beyond borders.

WHAT MAKES STUDYING AT ELTE SO GREAT?

It’s the balance between the historic prestige of the university and the modern, progressive approach to research. Beyond the high-quality education and access to incredible professors, ELTE feels like a second home with a great International community.

WHAT ARE / WERE YOUR CHALLENGES IN YOUR STUDY PROGRAM?

The transition after graduating from my Master’s brought a shift in expectations. It requires more autonomy, deeper discipline, and the ability to manage complex and long-term research projects. Adapting to these new academic demands while balancing life in a different culture sometimes felt overwhelming.

HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THESE CHALLENGES?

I’ve learned that this is not a solo journey. I participate in academic discussions, lean on my supervisors for guidance, and maintain a strong network of fellow doctoral students. I also take time to explore Hungary and enjoy my personal life.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE ELTE IN THREE WORDS?

Diverse, Inspirational, Community

HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR DEGREE WILL HELP YOU IN YOUR LIFE AND CAREER?

My journey is more than just a degree. It’s an experience that is helping me find my own voice and sharpen my perspective. It’s where I’m learning how to weave together research and the causes I care about most. Beyond the academic skills, the people I’ve met are shaping me into a more globally-conscious person, and that is a transformation I’ll carry with me long after I graduate.

DO YOU HAVE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE STUDENTS AT ELTE?

Don’t be afraid to take the leap! Elte’s professors are incredibly supportive, and the international student body is very diverse. Immerse yourself fully, not just in your books, but in the culture, the city, and the friendships you build here. These are the things that will make your time in Hungary truly unforgettable.
