Hi! I'm Janis. I am an Educational Science MA student and a History teacher. My biggest academic goal is to improve school environments for vulnerable children. I love travelling and exploring the history and culture of new places. I am also a big K-Pop fan. Rounding it all out is my precious winter bear, a harlequin cat named Lilith, a beautiful little muse who brings endless warmth and joy to my life.  I would love to help you feel at home and accompany you on this new journey at ELTE. What initially stood out to me about ELTE was its profound historical roots right here in Budapest, which is incredibly inspiring for me as a History teacher. However, what truly solidified my decision was the Educational Science MA program and the strong sense of community. The teachers are not only knowledgeable, but also very approachable and always willing to help if you reach out.

What makes studying at ELTE so great is the vibrant energy on campus and the incredible diversity of the student body. I appreciate and value that I am not just learning from the coursework, but also from the unique perspectives of my classmates from all over the world.

The biggest challenge for me was not necessarily the academic program itself, but rather the emotional weight of navigating so many major life changes entirely on my own. Moving to a new country, adjusting to life in Budapest, and starting a new chapter independently was a massive transition, and initially, it felt quite isolating. However, facing those changes alone ultimately pushed me to step out of my comfort zone, connect with my classmates, and actively build a support system from scratch.

Overcoming these challenges came down to a shift in perspective. I reminded myself that I had already taken a massive leap of faith just by deciding to study at ELTE as an international student. I realised that the world has so much to offer, and just as importantly, I have so much to offer to the world. Whenever the transition felt heavy, my mindset was simply to keep moving forward.

This degree is giving me the practical framework to turn my passion for education into tangible change. I have always connected deeply with the idea that many students come to us with a broken wing, and it is our responsibility to help them fly. The deep dives into educational theory and school effectiveness research in this MA program are providing me with the exact tools I need to build safer, more supportive learning environments. Ultimately, this degree will allow me to step into roles where I can influence organisational development in schools, ensuring that vulnerable children receive the support they truly need to thrive.

Be proactive about building your support system from day one. Reach out to your classmates, engage in university activities, and never hesitate to ask for help when things feel overwhelming. The academic journey is important, but the relationships and community you cultivate will truly define your experience. Embrace the uncertainty and take full advantage of every opportunity.
