The PADMICA project consortium has developed a module to help students preparing for mobility process the intercultural experiences they encounter during their time abroad and overcome challenges that may arise in an unfamiliar cultural environment.

The complete intercultural preparation module consists of two parts: an online component that students can complete independently and at their own pace, and a follow-up in-person workshop where, with the support of experts, they can further explore and deepen their intercultural knowledge.

The module is interactive and practice-oriented. When developing it, our experts prioritised learning methods that allow students to take an active role in the training rather than simply being passive recipients, as they might be in a traditional university lecture. This makes the workshop an engaging and accessible learning experience.

The online component of the module places particular emphasis on preparing students to process the emotional aspects of their intercultural experiences. It also offers practical, action-oriented techniques that can help make their time in an unfamiliar cultural environment easier to navigate.

There is also good news for colleagues working in higher education: thanks to its structure, the training can be easily adapted to a wide range of institutional contexts. It can therefore be integrated into different programmes and courses, helping as many students as possible who are preparing to study abroad develop valuable intercultural skills.

Although the online component can be completed independently and provides valuable learning material in its own right, combining it with an in-person session organised by a higher education institution offers students preparing for mobility an even more comprehensive preparation.

The module helps participating students to:

• reduce the anxiety and culture shock often experienced during and after mobility;
• gain a comprehensive understanding of the causes and typical forms of cultural differences;
• recognise common stereotypes and reflect on them critically;
• develop their intercultural competences and communication skills through real-life case studies;
• learn practical methods that can help them navigate intercultural environments more effectively;
• avoid or appropriately manage common intercultural challenges and misunderstandings.
   

It also helps higher education professionals to:

• better support their students in preparing for intercultural challenges;
• improve students’ well-being during and after mobility;
• enhance the quality of their mobility programmes and their long-term positive impact;
• offer students a practical yet scientifically grounded module that is easy to complete and can be readily integrated into diverse institutional environments.
