In support of the implementation of the AUREA project, ELTE’s international expert Tekla Gaál prepared a literature review examining the current international situation surrounding automatic credit recognition. The review explores the barriers that hinder automatic credit recognition, as well as institutional, policy-related and legal solutions that support the process, or could potentially help simplify it.
As part of the review, the author analysed policy documents, official reports and academic publications. In addition to the experiences of the Erasmus+ programme, the review also covered other credit mobility programmes, including the Swiss-European Mobility Programme (SEMP) and the UK’s Turing Scheme.
The literature reviewed shows that, despite European-level legal and policy frameworks, practices relating to automatic credit recognition remain inconsistent. Differences in national and institutional regulations, curricula and assessment systems, as well as various administrative barriers, can all complicate the recognition of credits earned abroad. Furthermore, reconciling institutional autonomy with common European principles remains a challenge. Digital solutions, including Erasmus Without Paper and the Online Learning Agreement, can provide important support; however, their use is not yet equally widespread across institutions.
The review also highlights the need for further research into the longer-term impact on students when credits earned abroad are only partially recognised or not recognised at all. Examining credit recognition practices at institutional level is another area where relatively little comparable information is currently available.
The study provides important background material for the AUREA project and contributes to the consortium’s efforts to formulate evidence-based recommendations for improving European practices in automatic credit recognition, drawing on available research findings and experience.
