What stood out to you about ELTE?

ELTE is among Hungary’s most prestigious universities, so for me, it was an obvious choice. The thought of being part of a university with a strong tradition of teaching and innovation was truly exciting. What’s more, I've always been passionate about sociology, and the opportunity to study it in a renowned foreign institution was an undeniable thrill. Hungary's reputation for a vibrant student life was an added bonus.

What makes studying at ELTE so great?

The professors in this program are very approachable and friendly. They do not only teach but also help you find internships, attend conferences, and collaborate on research, making sure you get a comprehensive education. Also, the ELTE community is warm and welcoming, especially when you join clubs and take part in extracurricular activities. This is a great way to make Hungarian friends who are always ready to help you out. Plus, it offers activities to get you involved in academic circles, broadening your horizons and helping you make valuable connections.

What are / were your challenges in your study program?

One of the most significant challenges I faced during my studies was working on my first research publication. I had never composed such a serious research paper before and felt overwhelmed by the experience. It was undoubtedly a stressful time, and I often found myself lost. Also, to be honest, sociology is quite theoretical, which at times led me to overthink whether I was truly grasping the subject matter. I often found myself pondering if I was learning the right way and understanding the essence of it all.

How did you overcome these challenges?

I overcame these challenges by seeking help from my professors. One professor, in particular, was a huge support. We communicated a lot, mainly about my research. Her assistance was vital for my academic journey, and I will always remember her as one of the greatest supporters of my academic thriving. Even though I started with little experience and made mistakes, working with her helped me get so much better. That's why I really appreciate the friendly and helpful approach that ELTE professors have, generally. No matter the challenges you face, you always have someone to talk to and get advice from.

How would you describe ELTE in three words?

Opportunity, Network, Future.

How do you think your degree will help you in your life and career?

I come from Kosovo, a country that has just recently experienced war. Growing up there, where nearly every family was affected by the tragic events of that time, I was exposed to many touching stories that greatly influenced my academic interests. I also witnessed challenges faced by my country on political and institutional fronts, which made me want to study something that could address such issues head-on. My decision to study Sociology, thus, was not just a personal interest. It was a sense of duty. A responsibility that I felt toward my homeland, which has a history of enduring hardships. As such, I am positive that my degree in sociology is a great start to tackle these problems and lead my way to finding solutions. Moreover, I plan to further study political science and/or international relations, for which the lessons I got from sociology will surely be invaluable.

Do you have any recommendations for future students at ELTE?

For future ELTE students, I suggest getting involved in extracurricular activities. ELTE has plenty of clubs and student societies to make your experience more exciting and help you learn new things. Make the most of opportunities to do well academically by taking part in student events like conferences, discussions, and panel talks. These experiences can really boost your future career. Your time here will be a mix of great learning and unforgettable moments. So, enjoy Budapest's lively atmosphere and let it give you your own sense of belonging :) .
