The joint project of the ADRA Foundation and the ELTE Bárczi Gusztáv Faculty of Special Needs Education, supported by the Hungary Helps Agency, has been launched. The development project will reach out to nearly 2,000 children. The special needs teachers will realise the desired goal in cooperation with the children, parents, teachers, and school leaders.

Last summer, Edwin Wagah approached the ADRA Foundation with the idea of an exciting development project, the aim of which is to prepare partner institutions in Kenya for the integration of children living with disabilities. Since then, the idea has entered the implementation phase: a development team of nine professionals arrived in Nairobi, Kenya on 26 September. After their arrival, the team members visited Kenyatta University first, where they had an official meeting about the programme and discussed the possible forms and content of cooperation between the two universities.

In the first phase of the four-year project, the Bárczi representatives are preparing five primary schools in Migori County for inclusive education, which is intended to ensure equal opportunities in education for children with disabilities. On 28 September, the members of the development team started screening students at Tagache Primary School in Muhuru-Bay. During the screening, the schoolchildren’s vision, hearing, and movement are tested with prior parental consent. Furthermore,

local teachers are also being trained on how to carry out the screening procedure in the future.

After the screening, the team members will establish methodological workshops for the schoolchildren, who will be prepared to adopt an inclusive attitude towards their peers living with disabilities. In the next few days, the experts from ELTE will hold a thematic workshop for local educators with the aim of teaching them the basics of differentiated education and establishing an appropriate classroom environment.

The experts taking part in the programme will give an introduction for local teachers to the methodological bases of inclusive education drawing on their decades of experience and expertise.

Our faculty is committed to social responsibility, which is why this project is of paramount importance to us. In the coming days, we will be revealing further intriguing details about the project.

Until then, please follow the Facebook pages of our faculty and ADRA Hungary for new contents.
