Studying Sociology at ELTE: A Journey of Growth and Exploration

Hi, my name is Mariel Delgado, and I come from the beautiful country of Costa Rica. I am a second-year student in the Sociology BA program. Today I am going to share with you what I like the most about studying Sociology in ELTE; however, if you have any questions about the major or ELTE, feel free to contact me any time.
Before diving into the main topic for this blog, let me tell you why I chose ELTE.
When I was researching universities for my studies, ELTE stood out to me because of its strong research orientation. Both the university and the Sociology bachelor's program provide an excellent foundation for students who are interested in developing research skills and exploring social phenomena in depth. The University is ranked as the best university in Hungary and among the top institutions in Central and Eastern Europe, highlighting its strong academic reputation and research excellence. You can check all the information about it on this link.
Another crucial factor in my decision was the availability of the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, which provides financial support to international students. This scholarship not only made my studies more accessible but also allowed me to fully focus on my academic and personal growth while studying abroad. I saw this as a fantastic opportunity to prepare myself for a future career in humanitarian affairs while gaining hands-on experience in social research methodologies.
What Makes Studying Sociology at ELTE So Special?
ELTE offers a dynamic academic environment where students can learn from experienced professors, participate in diverse academic and extracurricular activities, and develop an international perspective.
One of the aspects I appreciate the most is the structure of classes and evaluations. While the coursework is challenging and requires dedication, there is also room for students to explore topics beyond what is taught in the classroom. This approach encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and intellectual growth. For instance, you can participate in The Scientific Student Circles or TDK (its acronym in Hungarian) competing with a research based on a topic of your choice and present your findings.
The second aspect I would like to highlight is how flexible and diverse it is. You do not have to commit to just one area of sociology, you can explore so many different topics like data analysis, criminology, media studies, or gender studies. The variety of electives means you can really dive into what interests you most and even discover new passions along the way. Trust me, having that kind of flexibility makes a huge difference in figuring out what you want to do later in your academic and professional journey!
