Spring Cleaning Your Study Habits

Spring Cleaning Your Study Habits
I am Sarah Sabek, I come from Egypt and have been living in Hungary for almost 3 years.

I’m pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Kindergarten Education, I am now in my last semester of university, and I’m here to share a few more tips to prepare for the spring break.

Spring break is right around the corner, and let’s be honest, we’re all counting down the days because it’s been a busy start to the semester. But before we mentally check out, let’s take a moment to clean up not just our rooms, but our study habits too. Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that breaks hit differently when you’re not drowning in overdue work when you get back.

Now, I’m not saying you should spend your break hunched over textbooks, but a little structure now can save you from the post-break academic meltdown. So without further ado, let’s get into it!

Start With a Reality Check

What’s working? What’s not? Be brutally honest with yourself. Maybe you’ve been winging your assignments a little too much. Maybe your notes look more like scribbles than something actually useful. Maybe it’s the constant procrastination because of scrolling through reels all day. Maybe it’s even the lack of confidence or overthinking that holds us back. So, take a second to assess where you stand so you can figure out what actually needs fixing.

Tidy Up Your Study Space (and Your Digital Life)

I used to believe my desk chaos was part of my “creative process.” Turns out, it was just distracting and a physical image of my mental state. A quick cleanup like stacking books properly, tossing out useless papers, even just wiping down my desk always makes a huge difference. And don’t stop there. Go through your laptop too and your phone, find apps that distract you and limit time usage on them or delete them for a while, organize your files, delete random downloads, and maybe, just maybe, clear out the 50+ tabs you keep open “just in case”.

Rework Your Routine, Not Just Your To-Do List

We love to-do lists. We make them. We ignore them. The cycle continues. Instead of just listing out tasks, focus on when and how you do things. Are you more focused in the morning or at night? Do you work better in short sprints or long stretches? Adjust your routine so it actually fits you, not just what sounds productive on paper. For example, in some situations to do lists stress me out rather than help me organise my work so I toss them out till I actually need them. Just because it works for everyone, does not mean that it works for you too.

The “Low-Effort, High-Impact” Study Hack

Nobody wants to deep-dive into hardcore studying during spring break. The trick is to keep things light but consistent. Think passive learning, like listening to an audiobook while walking, reviewing flashcards during downtime, or even explaining a concept to a friend like you’re some kind of academic genius. It keeps your brain engaged without feeling like actual work. Trust me all these little tricks seem like nothing but actually enhance your brain and working capacity unconsciously.

Don’t Ghost Your Studies Entirely

Look, I love a good, stress free and me-time break. But disappearing from your studies completely? That’s a setup for future disaster. Pick one tiny thing, just one. Maybe it’s 15 minutes of reading. Maybe it’s rewriting messy notes. Even if the clock isn’t showing a “full hour” of free time to study or getting tasks done doesn’t mean it won’t be effective, use every minute you have because it all adds up in the end. Just something small to keep the momentum going so that getting back into it fully once the break is over isn’t a shock to you.

Final Thought: Be Flexible, Not Rigid

This isn’t about being perfect. You have to accept that not all days will be 100% and be able to move on with that overthinking thought and get things done. Some days you’ll be on top of things, and some days you’ll binge-watch an entire show in one sitting or bed rot for the whole day or even wanting a rest or “you day” to be able to continue working and that’s okay! Balance, my friend. A little effort now means you can actually enjoy your break; guilt-free and return without feeling like you’ve been academically wiped out.

So, before you pack your bags (or curl up for a staycation), take a few moments to reset. Your future self will appreciate it and of course as always trust yourself through this process!
