Lénárd Darázs might be the new rector of ELTE HU
The Senate of ELTE has elected Lénárd Darázs, Professor, as the next Rector of the university, who will take up the post on 1 August 2025. 

The Senate of Eötvös Loránd University held its meeting on 24 February 2025. Three candidates applied for the positon of Rector: Lénárd Darázs, Professor, Vice-Rector for General Affairs of ELTE, Zoltán Horváth, Head of Department, former Dean and Vice-Rector for International Affairs, and Sándor Katz, Academic, Professor and Director of Institute.

The decision was taken by secret ballot, with Senate members being allowed to nominate only one of the candidates. The Senate chose Lénárd Darázs as the candidate to become Rector by a convincing majority of 30 votes to one.

The candidates and their programme were presented in detail to the decision-making forums and the internal public of the University. The procedure for the election of the new Rector is laid down by law. The Senate has evaluated all the applications submitted and decided on the Rector candidate by a majority of its members. The Senate will now send this decision to the employer, who will decide on the appointment of the Rector after considering the opinion of the Senate. The Rector is appointed by the President of the Republic on the recommendation of the Minister responsible for maintenance.

Lénárd Darázs and László Borhy

Lénárd Darázs (1967) is a lawyer and university professor. He specialises in private law, competition law and the regulation of the European data economy and data assets. He has extensive university management experience, with previous experience in coordinating development programmes and strategic management of the university. He has chaired several university boards, including innovation, habilitation and ethics committees. He has been a key shaper of the university's international and domestic innovation activities and is also Vice President of the Hungarian Innovation Association.
