Learning Hungarian as a Foreign Language and Culture - DFP

Hungarian Diaspora scholarship holders participating in non-Hungarian language training must take part in a Hungarian as a foreign language and culture course (hereinafter referred to as the Hungarian abbreviation: MID) during their whole study period covered by the scholarship. The aim of this initiative is to contribute to the successful integration of students in Hungary and to the promotion of the Hungarian language.

Learning Hungarian is mandatory, failure to comply with the requirement will result in the termination of the scholarship status!

WHO DOES IT APPLY FOR? 

For which follows is it obligatory to take the MID course:

  • Students who are participating in non-Hungarian language training on any level  
  • Students in vocational preparatory program,
  • Those students who have transferred from self-financed training in the first and second semesters of scholarship training.

For which follows it is not obligatory to take the MID course

  • students studying in programmes offered in Hungarian  
  • students taking part in 1-2 semester-long short study programmes, including partial/exchange studies
  • In some other special cases, the Scholarship Holder might be exempt from the obligation to pass the language exam test. The exemptions are listed in the regulatory documents of the Scholarship Programme.

Diaspora Scholarship Holders studying in a foreign language programme who pass the intermediate level (B2) Hungarian as a foreign language complex language exam during their studies are exempt from the obligation to participate in the MID course.

CRITERIA AND CONSEQUENCES

The students will be notified at the beginning of the semester by the Department of Hungarian as a Foreign Language and / or the Faculty Coordinator about the process of the application. In the meantime, please wait patiently, you will be contacted when you can apply for the course.

The scholarship holder must prove that he / she has attended the MID courses throughout the semesters that were covered by the scholarship program. The MID courses could be substituted with other Hungarian courses (etc. private Hungarian classes). For this, the scholarship holder needs to submit a proof that he/she attends courses outside the university setting. For this the Department of Hungarian as a Foreign Language should be contacted.

If this does not happen, the student’s scholarship holder status will be terminated!

Language exam requirement

Beside the attendance of the MID course, Hungarian Diaspora scholarship holders are required to pass a Hungarian as a foreign language exam by the end of their studies, no later than within one year after obtaining their degree. In case this obligation is not fulfilled, the Scholarship holder needs to pay back the total amount of the tuition fee covered by the scholarship.

The level of the exam corresponds with the scholarship holders’ length of study period:

  • 3-4 semester – A2 level
  • 5-7 semester – B1 level
  • more than 7 semester – B2 level

Please note, that only those semesters need to be taken into consideration that were covered by the scholarship.

Scholarship holders can also certify their Hungarian language with a document “Certificate of Hungarian Language Assessment Result” issued by MFA Balassi (KKM Magyar Diplomáciai Akadémia Kft.).

Please note, that the expenses of the language exam are not covered by the scholarship.

IV.2 Obligations Concerning Learning Hungarian as a Foreign Language and Culture

  • 1. Scholarship holders studying in foreign language programmes (including all levels of education) are required to attend a Hungarian as a foreign language and culture course, provided by the host institution, during their studies pursued under the HDS Programme.
  • 2. Students are required – unless the chosen study course is provided in Hungarian – before obtaining their degree at the level of education associated with the scholarship holder status, but not later than one year after obtaining the degree (for exceptions, see the Implementation Guide), to take an official language exam in Hungarian as a foreign language at a level corresponding to the length of the study period, or certify their knowledge of Hungarian with a document “Certificate of Hungarian Language Assessment Result” issued by MFA Balassi (KKM Magyar Diplomáciai Akadémia Kft.); in case of failure to comply with this requirement, the participant shall agree to repay the training costs.
  • 3.In case a scholarship holder fails to comply with the obligation to learn Hungarian as a foreign language and culture, their scholarship holder status shall be terminated.
  • 4.In case a scholarship holder fails to comply with the obligation to take a language exam or certify their knowledge of Hungarian at a level corresponding to the length of the study period as per Section 2 above, they shall be required to repay the training costs.
  • 5.For scholarship holders studying in programmes offered in Hungarian, attendance of a Hungarian as a foreign language and culture course is optional.
