This year, László Lovász, shares the prize, which is often called the Nobel Prize in Mathematics with Avi Wigderson “for their foundational contributions to theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics, and their leading role in shaping them into central fields of modern mathematics”.

The directors of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Abel Prize-winning mathematician Endre Szemerédi and the current director of the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics, András Stipsicz and the former director of the Institute, Pál Péter Pálfy will be present at the online ceremony.
Although, due to the pandemic, the ceremony did not take place in person last year as well as this year, the personal receival of the award was not cancelled. On 10 May 2021, László Lovász received the award from Ambassador Trine Skymoen at the Norwegian Embassy in Budapest at a ceremony held in his honour, in the company of mathematician Endre Szemerédi and the President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Tamás Freund.
