Would you like your research to be made accessible to a larger audience in a comprehensible format? Science communication is becoming an increasingly prominent and essential part of a researcher's career in the era of open science and citizen science. Are you passionate not only about science itself but also about communicating it to the public? Do you want to share your enthusiasm with the world?

If so, apply for the 6th Science Communication Competition held by ELTE and win a pair of JBL Tune Beam earbuds and ELTE-themed gifts!

In addition, the best entries will be featured on ELTE’s official website, YouTube channel, and/or social media platforms.

Eligibility:
Students and members of teaching-research staff at Eötvös Loránd University.

Applicants to the 6th Science Communication Competition may submit their entries in one of the following categories:

Category I: Science Communication News Report/Article + Accompanying Image

  • News Report/Article specifications: Editable Word format, 1,500–3,000 characters including spaces.
  • Image specifications: One image illustrating the text, either created by the applicant or free of copyright restrictions.

Category II: Science Communication Video

  • Video specifications: Landscape orientation, MP4 or AVI format, maximum duration of 2 minutes.
  • Videos must be uploaded to YouTube as unlisted content.
  • The ELTE logo (downloadable from here) must appear at the end of the video.

We are seeking completed, comprehensive science communication works ready for immediate publication.

Evaluation:

Submissions will be assessed on basis of the following professional criteria: clarity, ability to capture attention, topic relevance, and the quality of information delivery. When preparing the submission, please bear in mind that the target audience is not a specialised professional community, but a broader segment of society interested in scientific developments. Accordingly, communication materials must also be understandable and engaging for lay audiences.

Chairperson of the jury: Professor Dr. Lénárd Darázs, Vice-Rector for General Affairs and Rector-Elect of ELTE.

Members of the jury: Representatives from the ELTE Directorate of Communications, the Science Policy Office, and the International Office.

Awards:

  • Grand Prize: a pair of JBL Tune Beam earbuds
  • Additional Prizes: ELTE gift packages
  • EKÖP and EKÖP-KDP Special Prizes: Applicants who receive research grants from the University Research Scholarship Programme (EKÖP) or the Cooperative Doctoral Programme (EKÖP-KDP) may enter the competition in a separate category if indicated at the time of application. Submissions may include the mandatory science communication product prepared within the framework of their scholarship obligations, provided they meet the specifications listed above.

Technical Information:

  • Submission Deadline: 11.59 p.m., 9 May 2025
  • Submission Procedure:
    • For Category I: submit the text and image electronically via email to tudkomm@elte.hu
    • For Category II: submit the YouTube link to the video via email to tudkomm@elte.hu
    • In both cases, the following information must be included in the email: applicant’s name, age, ELTE faculty, and ELTE affiliation (i.e. undergraduate student, master's student, doctoral student, doctoral candidate, or member of the teaching-research staff).

By submitting an application, the applicant consents to the publication of their winning entry on the ELTE website and other public platforms.
