Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of this magical season!

The Heart of Festivities: Vörösmarty Square Market

Vörösmarty Square hosts one of Budapest’s most iconic Christmas markets, known for its lively atmosphere and picturesque surroundings.  Located in the heart of the city, where you can enjoy the free performances, including folk music and Christmas carols.

Be sure to sample the food here! Chimney cakes (kürtőskalács), langos, and hearty stews are staples you can’t miss. For a truly Hungarian experience, pair these with a glass of warm mulled wine (forralt bor) spiced to perfection.

If you decide to check it out, just use the following address: Budapest, Vörösmarty tér 3, 1051

And you can more information about the activities in here.

St. Stephen's Basilica: A Winter Wonderland

Another must-visit spot is the Christmas market near St. Stephen’s Basilica. This market is famous not only for its variety of goods and treats but also every evening, the Basilica comes alive with 3D projections, bathing the square in colorful, festive imagery. Additionally, you can buy Hungarian hand-painted ornaments, locally made honey and paprika (a Hungarian staple) and more.

This market is the most awarded Christmas Market in Europe and has been taking the crown since 2020. If you want more information about the activities and opening hours,  please visit the Advent Bazilika page.

This market is easy to find, but if you need a little help, here is the address: Budapest, Szent István tér 1, 1051

Also, one of the highlights of visiting Budapest during Christmas is the magical evening ambiance. Streets are adorned with sparkling lights, and iconic landmarks, so walk around the market for more Christmassy vibes.

Practical Tips and Important Information

  1. Plan your visit: The markets typically open in mid-November and run until the end of December. Weekdays are less crowded, making it easier to browse and enjoy the atmosphere.
  2. Stay warm: The weather in December can be chilly, so layer up with scarves, gloves, and a cozy jacket.
  3. Explore Beyond the Markets: Take a ride on the light-covered Tram 2, visit the Buda Castle Christmas Tree, enjoy the ice-skating rings or walk around the Danube.

Happy Holidays and Boldog Karácsonyt! (That’s Merry Christmas in Hungarian!)
